Speaking and Listening Policy

Speaking and Listening Policy

 Peace Partnership Respect

 Aims

Language is an essential element for learning in a child?s life. The opportunities provided in a learning environment should make a major contribution to the development of a child?s ability to speak and actively listen.  It is an important tool for all areas of the curriculum, as talk (communication) underpins learning and thinking. In school our aim is to support the children?s journey through learning within a broad and balanced curriculum.  We aim to provide children with varied contexts for talk and acknowledge that children also need direct teaching in the skills of speaking and listening.

Introduction

There are five main purposes to this policy:

  • To establish an entitlement for all pupils
  • To establish high expectations for all staff of this subject
  • To promote continuity and coherence across the school
  • To make clear the school?s aim in order to promote public, and particularly parents? and carers?, understanding of the curriculum
  • To encourage active listening

Teachers will provide a range of opportunities for speaking and listening.  These opportunities will be provided for through a variety of contexts and will be supported through all curriculum areas.

Teaching speaking and listening

Early learning Goals

Communication, language and literacy

This area of learning includes communication, speaking and listening in different situations and for different purposes.  It is also to give all children the best opportunities for the effective development and learning in communication, language and literacy.

Children should be able to;

  •  Interact with others, negotiating plans and activities and taking turns in conversation
  • Enjoy listening to and using spoken language and readily turn it into their play and learning
  • Sustain attentive listening
  •  Listen with enjoyment
  • Extend their vocabulary
  • Speak clearly and audibly with confidence and control
  • Use talk to organise, sequence and clarify thinking

 National Curriculum Programme of Study

Teachers set appropriate challenges for all pupils through assessment that informs planning that is differentiated.

Assessment

Assessment of speaking and listening is carried out through teacher assessment.
