YEAR 6 - LITERACY

Romeo and Juliet

As part Year 6 Literacy for Spring Term we studied some works of Shakespeare.  We looked at Macbeth (The Scottish Play) and looked at characters in the play.  We also looked at Romeo and Juliet and used the balcony scene to develop our understanding on the use of appropriate conventions for writing conversations.

We also used linked this with other areas of the curriculum such as Art and Drama.

Here is one of our examples of dialogue:

Shakespeare's - The Balcony Scene

Juliet strolled onto the balcony, her mind busy with her thoughts.  Would she ever see him again?

She hoped so, even though she knew she should not.

Suddenly she heard rustling from the bushes below.

"Who's there?"  shouted Juliet.

"It's me, Romeo, the guy you met tonight," replied Romeo.  "i came to see you my love."

"Don't be so ridiculous.  If you get caught, they'll kill you!" cried Juliet.

"I'll do anything for you my love!" he exclaimed.

"Anyway, what are you doing here, you can't have just come to tell me that you love me?" asked Juliet.

"I came to ask yo to marry me," called Romeo.

"Meet me at the chapel if you do want to marry me, tomorrow morning!" he exclaimed and off he went.

Here is another example of dialogue inspired by reading Macbeth - it was actually designed as a wanted poster.

!  Wanted Macbeth  !

Macbeth is wanted for murdering the King of Scotland

If captured  -  money reward

This man is wanted for committing homoicide and infanticide,

and also murdering the King because his ambitious wife forced him to do it so Macbeth could become King.

He is a muscular man, wearing armour with the Scottish crest on it.

He is also a bold man with a rugged beard.
