Year 6 History

HISTORY

As part of Year 6's History topic Year 6 visited RAF Hendon in the autumn term.

Here is an account of the visit written by Ellie...............

"On Wednesday 8 November 2006, Year 6, their teachers and some other adults went to the RAF museum in Hendon.  They went because their study topic in History is being an evacuee in World War Two.

When we first got in the museum there was a place called Aeronauts, where they were lots of things to do.  There was a huge hang glider, an aiming system and lots more.

Next a lady took us to a place which was meant to be a classroom.  It was made out of wood.  When we got into the room we realised that it didn't look like a normal classroom.  It had desks instead of tables and they were all in twos.   We pretended that we were children in 1939.  When we came out we saw lots of model airplanes, helicopters and some ships.

When we finished looking around we went to the shop and saw lots of cool stuff.  After the shop we went into another building where we saw more airplanes and there was a show as well.  It was about the army's finest hour".

Note from Mrs Shaw - This work is an example of how Year 6 linked their history topic "How World War II affected the lives of children" with report writiing in Literacy.

Here are two more pictures taken on the trip to RAF Hendon, they show World War II planes.  They are of a  German fighter plane called a Messerschmidt Black 6.  The children noted that the underneath of the plane is a different colour to that of the top.  This is because the grey blue of the underneath helps camouflage when viewing from below.  Whereas the colour when viewing from above is a brown to camouflage with the earth.

Mr O'Neill who is the History Co-ordinator at Honilands set Year 6 a challenge.  He asked them to find the Messerschmidt Black 6, which is his favourite plane.   The children searched for the black aeroplane to no avail.  They looked in the Bomber Hall, the Hanger and the Flight Hall.  Eventually they gave in and asked one of the security guards, who informed them that it was not a black plane, but in actual fact a plane with a black number 6 on it.  The children were really happy to have found it and understand why it's one of Mr O'Neill's favourites.

GEOGRAPHY

As part of their Geography curriculum, Year 6 studied Rainforests

Here are some interesting facts found out by Ashley:

A tropical Rainforest is a place where there are thousand of trees and creatures and it is very dense, warm and wet.

Tropical Rainforests can be found in South America, Central America, Africa and South East Asia and they are all between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn in a belt round the equator.

Rainforests are homes to lots of small animals and small insets.

The climate in Rainforests is never freezing but never hot because it rains 3.8cm per week.  They have the same rainfall all year round.

Rainforests are important because the trees and plants remove carbon-dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their roots to generate oxygen

Here is a wall display of images of animals of the Rainforest
